As you prepare for a career in the world of electrical engineering, there are a few hurdles that must be jumped over. Electrical engineering is quite the intellectual job as your brain is used a lot for concepts and designs plus interacting with customers and computers. Another part of the engineering field is the academics that must be achieved before starting this career choice. This field wants high school graduates or the equivalent, college graduates with a focus on engineering with both their majors and minors and the electrical engineer certification exam has to be taken and passed as well.

There are specifics that are incorporated during the electrical engineer certification exam. The test must be taken it two parts. They are each 4 hours in length. Every test taker can use a mechanical pencil, approved calculators, a handbook, and test booklet for problem solving. The questions are in two parts, a general section that focuses on the math and science of engineering and a more specific one geared to each person’s specific industry of choice, which is where the electrical engineering questions would be introduced.

The electrical engineer certification exam is also known as the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Once this exam is taken, it certifies a person as an engineer in training. A score of 70 must be achieved in order to pass, but that is not the end to the certification process. It is almost like the beginning. Each state requires that a new engineer or engineer in training performs a specific period of time of apprenticeship, usually 5 years. The next step is the PE exam, which stands for Professional Engineer and that, is the final stage before a graduate can enter the workforce as an engineer with the skills needed to succeed.
